Prompt for this run

Build a pentatonic synthesizer pad grid and arpeggiator using the provided Tone.js library. Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as needed. Write it to `index.html` in the current working directory using your file tools. Inline your own CSS and JavaScript. Do not use external assets, CDNs, or network requests. Use the provided `tone.min.js` (global `Tone`) through a plain local script tag; the runner will inline it into the final artifact. Required behavior: - Show ten labeled pads for two octaves of a C-major pentatonic scale. Clicking a pad plays its note through a synthesized voice with reverb and visibly marks the active pad. - Provide a separate sequence-selection toggle for each pad. Start with a nonempty selection. The arpeggiator repeatedly plays selected notes in ascending pitch order, one note per eighth-note step. - Provide Play, Stop, and a tempo control from 60 to 180 BPM. Tempo and selection changes take effect during playback. An empty selection produces no new notes. - Activate audio through a user gesture. Stop prevents new arpeggiator notes, allowing existing release and reverb tails to decay. Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers. - Synthesize every sound; do not load audio files. Verify: Click a pad and check its active feedback. Start the arpeggiator, change one selected note and the tempo, and check that the visible sequence responds. Stop playback and inspect the console for audio-initialization or scheduling errors.

Tone 14.8.49. Let's build the app.

Design:
- 10 pads: C-major pentatonic spanning two octaves: C4 D4 E4 G4 A4 C5 D5 E5 G5 A5.
- Each pad has a toggle for sequence selection (checkbox-ish). Clicking pad body plays note.
- Arpeggiator: use Tone.Transport with a repeating eighth-note schedule. Use Transport.scheduleRepeat with a callback. On each step, read the current selected notes, sorted ascending (by MIDI), play note. Avoid overlapping schedulers: track the repeat event id, cancel before scheduling.
- Tempo control 60-180 BPM, updates Transport.bpm during playback.
- Play/Stop. Stop: Transport.stop(), clear repeat? "Stop prevents new arpeggiator notes, allowing existing release and reverb tails to decay." So on stop, clear the repeat event and stop transport. Don't dispose the synth (that would cut tails). Keep synth.
- Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers: cancel existing repeat id first.
- Audio init from user gesture: Tone.start() on any interaction.
- Sounds: synth with reverb. Use a PolySynth with Tone.Synth oscillators, through a Reverb (decay ~3) and maybe FeedbackDelay. Chain: PolySynth -> Filter? -> Reverb -> destination plus dry path? Connect synth -> reverb -> destination and synth -> destination wet mix. Simpler: synth -> reverb (wet 0.35) -> destination, plus synth connect directly to destination for clarity. Actually PolySynth.connect(reverb); reverb.connect(destination); synth.connect(destination) gives dry + wet.

Active pad feedback: visual class .active with glow, removed after ~250ms or on note release.

Sequence visible response: show step indicator, and highlight the currently playing pad, and display "sequence" list of selected notes in ascending order. Show a step counter with dots.

Also show visualization of sequence as chips. When selection changes, re-render sequence display.

Important: In the step callback, compute sorted selected each time, index modulo length. Keep stepIndex; reset when selection changes? Fine to keep modulo.

Also schedule the tempo via Transport.bpm.rampTo? Direct set bpm takes effect immediately on transport timeline; setting Transport.bpm.value mid-playback works.

Handle timing: use Transport.scheduleRepeat(cb, "8n") and Transport.start(). Stop: Transport.stop(); Transport.cancel(0)? Transport.cancel clears all scheduled events including our repeat. Use clear() to remove repeat id.

Let me design note attack with slot: playNote(note, time, duration) using synth.triggerAttackRelease(note, "16n", time, velocity). Velocity slightly varying.

Also render keyboard-like pads grid of 10 pads arranged horizontally with labels C4 etc. With toggle buttons in each pad corner labeled "SEQ" or a checkbox.

Let's implement. Pad elements:

<div class="pad" data-note="C4">
  <button class="seq-toggle" aria-pressed="true" title="Toggle in sequence">SEQ</button>
  <div class="pad-note">C4</div>
  <div class="pad-key">C</div>
</div>

Clicking pad anywhere (except toggle) plays note. Toggle stops propagation.

Accessibility: toggle buttons with aria-pressed.

Make sure clicking pad triggers Tone.start() first then play. Wrap in async gesture handler: await ensureAudio(); then play.

Note: Tone.start() only works in gesture; our click handler is a gesture. Use promise chain.

Reverb creation: new Tone.Reverb({decay: 3.2, preDelay: 0.02, wet: 0.35}).toDestination(); Reverb's generate can be async but fine.

Also add a subtle delay? Keep reverb only plus maybe a filter. Avoid AudioWorklet nodes. FeedbackDelay uses Delay and works under timer? FeedbackDelay uses native DelayNode — should work (allowed per instructions).

Synth voice: PolySynth(Tone.Synth, {oscillator:{type:"triangle"}, envelope:{attack:0.01, decay:0.2, sustain:0.25, release:1.2}}). volume -10dB.

Reverb send: create a Tone.Gain for dry + reverb. Prefer Tone.Freeverb? No — not allowed. Use Reverb (convolution built from noise buffer generation - works offline via JS, no worklet). Good.

Timing test: Transport with lookAhead.

Also let's include a status line: "Playing · step 3 · 96 BPM".

Add keyboard shortcuts? maybe space toggles play, but space could conflict — fine, add.

Also ensure stop and play button states.

Let me write index.html.

For the "sequence responds" visible check, I'll have a sequence strip showing the ordered selected notes with the current step highlighted, updated in the step callback and on selection change. Use requestAnimationFrame? Step callback runs in Tone's clock; updating DOM directly is fine.

Implementation of arp:

let repeatId = null;
function startArp(){
  if (Transport.state === "started") return; // avoid double
  Transport.bpm.value = bpm;
  Transport.cancel(0); // remove prior events
  repeatId = Transport.scheduleRepeat((time)=>{
    const notes = selectedNotes(); // sorted by midi
    if(!notes.length){ return; }
    const idx = stepCount % notes.length;
    const note = notes[idx];
    arpSynth.triggerAttackRelease(note.name, "8n", time, 0.8);
    Tone.Draw.schedule(()=>{ highlight... }, time);
    stepCount++;
  }, "8n");
  stepCount = 0;
  Transport.start("+0.05");
}

Note that skipping when empty should still advance step? The requirement: empty selection produces no new notes. Let's not advance stepCount when empty (keeps ordering stable). Fine.

Stop: Transport.stop(); Transport.cancel(0); Transport.off? Need to ensure repeat removed: Transport.clear(repeatId).

Note: after Transport.stop, Transport.position resets? stop sets position 0. Fine.

Drawing: use Tone.Draw.schedule for DOM highlight synchronized to audio time.

Selection changes during playback: callback reads live selection array each step — good, no reschedule needed. If selection becomes empty mid-play, no notes.

Tempo: bpm slider input updates Transport.bpm.value live and label.

Now visual design: dark gradient background, glass pads, glow on active. Pads arranged in a row with height varying maybe. Use flexbox wrap so it fits 1200x800 viewport.

Pad colors: pentatonic hue mapping by index.

Let me write the code.

Also add a reverb-affected solo synth separate from arp synth? Can share one PolySynth — "Clicking a pad plays its note through a synthesized voice with reverb". Use the same PolySynth for both, that's fine and avoids doubling CPU. But concurrent arp + press notes on PolySynth is fine.

Active pad mark: add class 'lit', remove after 300ms (visual decay). Also highlight pads currently playing from arp using Draw scheduling and clear after ~180ms.

Let's ensure note values: C4 D4 E4 G4 A4 C5 D5 E5 G5 A5 → midi 60,62,64,67,69,72,74,76,79,81. Use Tone.Frequency(note).toMidi() for sorting.

Write the file.

Also a "master" volume/mute? Not required. Maybe a small volume slider—optional, skip to reduce risk. Could add but keep it minimal: skip.

Add console error capture display? Not needed, but I could add a small status area for audio state. I'll include a status pill showing "Audio: idle/ready".

Let me write.

Tone 14.8.49 is present. Now I'll build the app.

There is a bug: I reassign `strike` and `pulseViz` after the closures were created. `strike` is a function declaration; reassigning `strike` with a wrapper that calls prev... but `prev` was the original strike which calls pulseViz (original, by closure referencing variable pulseViz — since pulseViz is a `let`/function declaration variable, reassigning it will make the closure use the new one). Actually `pulseViz` reassignment affects the variable, so inside strike's call `pulseViz(note)` resolves the current binding → the new wrapper. The wrapper calls originalPulse which is the original function reference — good. The `strike` reassignment wrapper is pointless but harmless... actually it's harmful? `strike` reassignment: prev is original strike; wrapper calls prev → fine. Also event handlers call `strike` by variable name at call time → wrapper. Fine but remove the mess. Let me clean that up: remove the reassignment wrappers and just add energy increment inside pulseViz directly.

Note: `pulseViz` is declared with `function pulseViz(note)` — a function declaration inside the IIFE, so it can be reassigned via `pulseViz = ...`? Function declarations create mutable bindings, so yes. But cleaner: put energy update inside pulseViz and remove the wrapper block.

Also there's a subtle issue: `Tone.Draw` — is it exported in Tone 14 as `Tone.Draw`? Yes, Tone.Draw.schedule exists.

Another issue: Reverb's `generate()` returns a promise; calling it isn't required since reverb auto-generates. Fine.

PolySynth option `maxPolyphony` is a property not option — in Tone 14, `new Tone.PolySynth(Tone.Synth, {maxPolyphony:16,...})` — maxPolyphony is an own property; passing in options may throw "maxPolyphony is not a valid option"? PolySynth has maxPolyphony as a property, so set after creation. Let me fix that.

Also Tone.PolySynth(Tone.Synth, {...}) in Tone 14 — constructor signature is PolySynth(voice, options). Voice options passed: volume, oscillator, envelope. Works.

`Tone.Transport.position = 0` — setting position to 0 (number) is allowed? Transport.position setter accepts Time. 0 is valid.

`Tone.Transport.cancel(0)` after stop clears scheduled repeats; called after clear anyway.

Also, potential problem: stopArp calls Transport.cancel(0) which also clears future events; fine.

Reverb decay 3.4: Reverb generate builds an impulse response offline with OfflineAudioContext — is that allowed in sandbox? It's not a network/worklet request. OfflineAudioContext should work. But to be safe, Tone.Reverb.generate uses OfflineAudioContext; should be OK. Yet tone uses `Tone.Offline` which uses native OfflineAudioContext — permitted.

However, one risk: Reverb generates async, and the first note may be silent while impulse not ready? Reverb's ready promise — wet only. Not fatal.

Also limiter: Tone.Limiter uses DynamicsCompressor — fine.

Let me fix the code issues and test.

Looks good. The warnings are expected pre-gesture. Now click a pad (C4 at ~111,235), check active state and audio ready.

Note: the pads look short in height compared to min-height 132px — they appear ~118 tall. Fine.

Let me click pad C4 and then check audio state via inspect.

Layout looks good. Now let's click a pad and verify audio activation + active feedback.

Audio running 44.1 kHz, note C4 triggered, viz pulse visible. The C4 pad "lit" class probably already faded by screenshot time (320ms) — but the screenshot shows no glow on C4. Time between click and screenshot may exceed 320ms. To verify the active class works, I can use motion capture during click, or increase flash to a slightly longer 420ms. Also arp flash 130ms is short but visible with Tone.Draw. Let's verify via DOM check right after click using evaluate? There's no evaluate tool. I can use motion action which captures frames.

Let me test Play then capture motion. First click Play (x=100,y=470).

Audio initialized and C4 triggered. Now start the arpeggiator and capture motion to verify step highlights.

Play works and button green. But "step –" and no chip highlight / no step dot on. Hmm — after ~1.2s at 104 BPM, 8n steps should have fired ~2-3 times, and Draw.schedule callbacks should highlight. Screenshot shows step – and no step dots on. The DOM text says "step –". So Tone.Draw.schedule callbacks aren't running? Or the repeat callback not firing because Transport.start("+0.03")?

Wait, the initial renderSequence calls markStep(playing=false) which set stepStatus "step –". The Draw callback sets it. If Draw isn't running, no update. Tone.Draw relies on requestAnimationFrame loop registered when context started — Draw's loop is created in the context's `_draw` timeline which uses a `Tone.Draw` "anticipation" loop. In Tone 14, Draw uses `context.draw` and RAF loop started via `context.on('tick')`? Actually Tone.Context has a draw loop only if `Tone.Draw` is used—it starts a RAF-based ClockSource. Hmm, but the "warning: AudioContext not allowed to start" repeats and there could be issues.

Also possible: scheduleRepeat isn't firing because Transport's clock uses a Worker by default? Instructions say the provided Tone.js uses timer-based clock (they patched it). So Transport works.

The issue may be Tone.Draw.schedule not executing. Let me test by checking DOM after some seconds via inspect (DOM text). Let's inspect now.

Also the pads: C4 shows slightly brighter border in the screenshot? Hard to tell. The step clock panel waveform amplitude did change (amp bigger since playing). steps dots off.

Let me inspect DOM again to see if step status updates.

The arpeggiator is running: step 2/5, E4 chip highlighted, E4 pad lit, step dot 2 on, viz pulses visible.

Now: change one selected note (toggle off A4 / toggle on D4) and change tempo, verify visible response. Then stop and check console.

Toggle off A4: click SEQ button at ~(539,186). Then set tempo via drag slider to ~140. Slider at x from 468 to 617 mapping 60-180; 140 → x = 468 + (80/120)*149 ≈ 567. Drag to that.

Arpeggiator is stepping correctly (step 2/5, E4 highlighted). Now change a selected note and the tempo mid-playback.

Stop works with no errors. But two issues:

1. After stop, the E4 chip still shows a "now"-ish outline (white outline) — the chip outline remains because `now` class removed? Actually the E4 chip appears as an empty rounded rect with white border - that's the flash from Draw? No... The class "now" removed and "chip" background dim; the E4 chip looks empty/bordered because... it's actually chip with text hidden? Hmm, in the screenshot the second chip shows no text and a white border. That's odd. Maybe it's `now` class removed but the transition mid-way? Actually the screenshot shows E4 chip as a dark rounded rect with white outline and no text — could be a rendering artifact: chip was white (now) and removing background transitions, and text color transitions from dark to light... but text appears missing. Hmm, the text may be dark (#04131b) mid-transition while background already turned dark → invisible. That's a transition artifact, transient. But since `now` class was removed at stop via markStep(false), the text color transition takes 0.18s while screenshot captured instantly. Likely transient. Not a real bug, though I could avoid the transition issue by using a shorter transition. It's fine.

2. "step 0/4" shown in stepStatus after stop instead of "step –". markStep(false) sets textContent only when on; else "step –". But Draw.schedule already queued a callback that ran after markStep and set step 0/4? Indeed, a Draw callback scheduled for the last step may execute right after stop and set "step 0/4". Because stop sets step=0 then Draw sets text with step 0 → step 0/4. Cosmetic. Fix: in Draw callback, check `if (!playing) return;` at the top. That prevents stale updates after stop. Also flashPad after stop could light a pad briefly — prevented by same guard.

3. The pad flashes after stop: E4 looks lit-ish in screenshot? Yes E4 appears lit with glow, likely stale Draw callback or the 130ms flash. Guarding fixes.

4. Also stop should not leave a chip highlighted - guarded.

Another consideration: repeated Play check. Let me test play/stop/play rapidly and verify no overlapping schedulers — hard to detect audibly, but my code guards with `playing` flag and clears repeat. Also transport.start with a running transport logs warning? We stop before start. Fine.

Also empty selection: if all deselected while playing, callback returns early; step not advanced. Then stop. Let's test empty selection quickly? I'd like to verify no notes but that's audio-level. Test toggling all off and check status stays at step count? Since no notes, Draw never fires → chip highlight remains from last note (stale). Better: when selection becomes empty while playing, clear the now highlights in renderSequence via markStep(playing) — markStep with list.length 0 sets stepStatus "step –" and removes now classes (since condition false). Good, that happens on toggle.

Let me apply the guard fix and also handle on stop: cancel pending Draw? Simpler guard.

Also, one more: after Stop, el.status text is right.

Also small improvement: at stop, guard flash timers to remove lit classes? Requirement only says stop prevents new notes. Pads lit briefly is fine.

Apply edit: in Draw.schedule callback add `if (!playing) return;`.

Also consider `markStep` at stop sets "step –" but stale draw. Guard fixes.

Let me also verify pressing Play twice quickly doesn't double-schedule: play button toggles between play/stop when playing, so double click would stop. Hmm — requirement says "Repeated Play must not create overlapping schedulers." My play button toggles: when playing, clicking Play stops. That's a toggle behavior; fine. But also I do `if (playing) return;` inside startArp. Good.

However, one risk: user clicks Play while the ensureAudio promise is pending multiple times → multiple .then callbacks calling startArp; the `playing` guard prevents duplicates. Good.

Apply the fix, reload, verify quickly with a play/stop/play sequence and check step advancing and no console errors.

Stop works with no errors. I noticed a stale `Draw` callback can paint step UI right after Stop (showing "step 0/4"). Let me guard that.

→ edit {"edits":[{"newText":" Tone.Draw.schedule(() => {\n if (!playing) return; // ignore callbacks queued before Stop\n const

Also stopArp should clear chip highlights immediately: markStep(false) does remove now classes. Yes.

Also there's a subtle issue: `if (!playing) return;` inside the repeat callback after triggering the note — at the moment the repeat fires while playing is true, fine.

Now reload and test: play, wait, stop, play again, check that step advances and stop leaves "step –".

Reloaded state is correct. Now test Play → wait → Play again won't be possible (toggle). Test start, stop, start: verify scheduler doesn't double by checking no console errors and step sequence sane. Also test empty selection while playing.

Sequence: click Play (100,470), wait, then deselect all 5 seq toggles to check empty selection (no errors), then re-enable one, stop.

Let me click play.

The screenshot appears captured at the very start (audio state pill still shows idle in the image while DOM says running; screenshots may lag). Step shows "step –" right after start which is expected before the first Draw.

Let me inspect after a moment.

Playing state good, A4 chip lit and A4 pad lit (visible faint glow). Note: pads' "lit" glow could be stronger. In the screenshot the A4 pad has subtle glow, ok.

Now test empty selection: turn off all 5 selected. That takes 5 clicks. Let me click C4, E4, G4, A4, D5 toggles. Then check DOM that sequence is empty and no errors, then re-enable C4 and stop, then test double-start via keyboard? Fine.

Click toggles at y=187: C4 x=117, E4 x=331, G4 x=438, A4 x=544, D5 x=758.

Empty selection works: "No notes selected — arpeggio is silent", step –. There's a leftover step dot 1 on from the previous state, minor cosmetic — markStep(false) should clear dots... it does, but here it shows dot 1 lit while "step –". Actually markStep(playing=true) called after selection cleared: dotEls toggled with `on && list.length > 0 && ...` → false, so all dots off. But the dot shows lit. Hmm, maybe Draw callback from the last step ran after renderSequence, and since `playing` is still true, it lit a dot and set "step –"? No, it would set "step 1/1"... It set the dots based on (step-1)%DOT_COUNT. Since step got advanced, dot index lit. And stepStatus text says "step –" — wait, the last Draw would set "step 1/1". Then toggle → renderSequence → markStep(true) clears dots and sets "step –". But screenshot shows dot 1 lit and "step –". Contradiction... unless after that, another Draw callback fired (queued before toggle) which lit a dot AND set text "step 1/1"? Text says "step –", so no.

Possibly the remaining dot is just the CSS transition fading (0.12s) captured mid-fade? Screenshot is immediately after click; dot transitions from on to off in 120ms — plausible that it appears lit. Yes, likely a transient.

More important: while empty, the arp repeat continues but produces no notes — good.

Now re-enable C4 and stop; check for errors. Also test Play again after Stop for repeat-scheduler sanity (check step progresses normally, no duplicate rapid notes visible in viz). Let's re-enable C4, click stop, then click play twice? Play toggles... Click play, inspect, click play (stops), click play again → restarts. Then final stop.

Actually simpler: click Stop now, then Play, inspect (steps advance), then Stop, then check console has no errors.

Let me click Stop.

Clean stop, no console errors. Now re-enable some notes, and test rapid repeated Play (double start) to ensure no overlapping schedulers. I'll re-enable C4, E4, G4, A4, D5 maybe. Then click Play, then click Play again quickly (which stops, since toggle) — hmm, that doesn't test repeated Play start. To test repeated starts I can use keyboard Space? Same handler toggles.

I could test programmatically via the window.__pad API: call startArp() twice while playing. That's accessible from console, but the browser tool has no evaluate. However, startArp is guarded; the main risk is transport start twice. Since startArp returns early when playing, it's fine.

Alternative test: click Play, and while playing press Space (would stop). Not needed.

Let me verify restart works after stop: click Play, inspect, ensure steps advancing from 1. Then re-enable a couple notes first.

Enable C4 (117,187), E4, G4, A4, D5 to restore something musical. Let's do C4, E4, G4, A4, D5.

Clean stop with no errors. Let me restore a selection and verify restart after stop works.

C4 is now selected. The "SEQ" toggle label on off-state pads is somewhat dim but readable. Fine.

Now click Play to restart after stop and inspect that stepping resumes from step 1.

Restart works after stop. Let me now do a quick check after ~1s that steps advance on the restarted transport (no stale scheduler, and only one). I'll inspect once more.

Also, I should consider the risk of a stale `repeatId` from Transport.cancel(0) clearing all events — it's fine.

One more consideration: the pad "active" visual feedback for a mouse click is now only 320ms; in the earlier screenshot at ~immediate timing it didn't show. It's fine but I could make the press flash a bit longer (450ms) for clearer feedback. Also, the "lit" glow looked subtle. Let me strengthen glow: increase inset shadow and border glow, and maybe make the bar wider. Also increase flash to 420ms.

Let me also reduce the time I spend. Apply small visual strengthening:
- .pad.lit box-shadow stronger + a background tint.
- flash 420ms.

Also add ring animation? Keep simple.

Then verify inspect (steps advancing) and final screenshot with a pad lit via motion capture maybe. Motion action captures frames after an interaction? "motion" tool shows motion frames — likely takes frames over time. I could click a pad then motion, but motion probably captures animation. Simpler: use `click` then immediately `screenshot`; screenshot lags a bit but fine.

Actually the earlier screenshot sequence showed screenshots captured before the click's effects at times, so the lit state may be missed. I'll trust CSS.

Let's apply edit and reload, then test pad click + screenshot.

Restart works. Let me strengthen the active-pad glow slightly so click feedback is unmistakable, then re-verify.

→ edit {"edits":[{"newText":" .pad.lit{\n transform:translateY(-4px) scale(1.015);\n border-color:rgba(200,238,255,.95);\n background:lin

Initial state good. Now click a pad (e.g., G5 at x=955) and take motion/screenshot to catch the lit state. Use motion which likely captures several frames after a click? Let me use click on G5 and then take a screenshot quickly. The click result includes a screenshot which may be captured slightly after; earlier it seemed captured pre-state in some cases. Let's try motion instead: click then motion? Motion probably requires animation running. I'll just click and screenshot separately.

The screenshot is captured before/at the click moment (G5 not lit yet, status text updated to "Note G5"). Screenshots lag behind state, so hard to verify the lit state visually. DOM check can't show classes.

I could verify the lit class via a temporary debug hook: expose lit state in the status text? Already show "Note G5" and pad flashes. Better: add a debug-free but user-visible confirmation. The pad flash is CSS class; I can verify by inspecting computed styles via... no evaluate tool.

Alternative: use `motion` action to capture animated frames right after triggering — but I can't trigger and motion in one call. Click already happened. Let me use the keyboard path to trigger a note and simultaneously... no.

Simplest: temporarily set the flash duration to very long (e.g., 2000ms) via a query param? Not needed — I can use motion right after a click by placing pointer? Motion captures frames over some interval after current state; pads lit only when struck.

Another approach: trigger a pad note via keyboard key ("1" → C4) and immediately call motion. Key press via tool returns after the press, then motion will capture subsequent frames, but the flash (420ms) may expire. Hmm.

Instead, I can add a temporary long flash for verification: change strike flash to 3000ms, reload, click pad, screenshot → confirms styling; then revert to 420. That's a reliable visual check and quick. Also the arp highlight persists continuously while playing anyway, which I already saw (A4/E4 pads glowed in earlier screenshots). Indeed in an earlier frame, the A4 pad appeared brighter/outlined? Looking back at the initial screenshots, pads didn't show obvious glow. Hmm.

Let me do the temporary long-flash test to confirm the lit style renders strongly.

Screenshots are captured slightly before the click effect. Let me temporarily lengthen the flash to verify the active-pad style visually.

Final state good. Let me do one last full flow: pad click, play, tempo change, stop, check console for errors. I've already done each. But since I reverted the file, a final play/stop sanity check is worthwhile.

Click Play, wait a beat via inspect, then Stop, then reload to reset to initial selection state so the artifact starts clean. Actually reload at end gives the default initial state (5 notes, stopped) — good for the delivered artifact. Let me run play→inspect→stop.

Excellent — this confirms everything visually: audio running pill, E4 pad lit with glow, E4 chip highlighted, step 2/5, dot 2 on, Play button green "Playing", waveform active, pulse ring.

Now Stop and reload to leave a clean initial state.

Everything works: E4 pad glowing, chip highlighted, step 2/5, tempo 104. Final stop and reset.

Stop works cleanly, no errors in console. One cosmetic issue: after stop, the E4 chip is left with a white outline and no visible text (transient transition artifact). In this screenshot it's clearly a dim empty chip — the text is invisible. That's because the `.now` class removal happens but... wait, the chip text is gone. It's not a transition timing issue: this screenshot was taken after stop and the chip E4 still has a white border and no text. Hmm, the chip is rendered with the `now` class? Text color #04131b on dark background would look invisible-ish, but the background should be light if `.now` present. It shows a dark chip with a white ring and no text.

Wait — maybe the chip has the `.now` class removed but its text color transitioned to #aeb7db... it should be visible then. Actually maybe there's a leftover chip with no text because the Draw callback... no, chips are recreated only by renderSequence.

Look closer: the chip at index 1 (E4) is a rounded rect with a bright border, dark fill, and no text. The `now` class has border-color:#bff4ff, background gradient light. Perhaps this is the CSS transition mid-way: our earlier fix guards Draw after stop but the chip retains `now`? If `now` retained, background would be light. Unless... the CSS transition on background (linear-gradient) doesn't animate; it flips instantly. So dark fill + white border = some partial state.

Hmm, could it be the `:focus` outline? The chip is not focusable. Actually! It's probably the `now` class still applied but the browser is rendering the paint mid-transition of box-shadow... no.

Wait — maybe it's the leftover "now" class with `colour` and the screenshot renderer hasn't painted the gradient? Let's just verify by clicking stop again (idempotent) or inspect text. DOM text shows chips C4 E4 G4 A4 D5 — text exists in DOM. So visually it's a paint artifact, likely due to `transform` + `background` transition mismatch. It's transient in a real browser (transition 0.18s) and the capture is instantaneous. The earlier screenshot after stop (previous run) showed the same thing, so the harness captures right at the class change.

To make it robust, I'll avoid the mismatch by not transitioning `background`/`color` on chips — instead transition only box-shadow/transform, so when `now` is removed the chip instantly looks normal. Simplest: set the chip's `now` state to use an outline + light background without gradient transitions. I'll change `.chip` transition to `transform .12s ease, box-shadow .12s ease` and keep colors instant.

That will remove the artifact.

Also after stop, the step dot 2 remains lit in this capture (same transition artifact on dots). Step dots transition `background .12s`; markStep(false) removes. The dot appears lit at capture instant. Acceptable.

Let me apply the chip transition change, reload, and finish. Also this is my final edit; then a quick reload check.

Stop is clean with no console errors. One paint artifact: the deselected chip briefly keeps a highlight ring due to color transitions. Let me make those instant.

Clean initial state, no errors. Final file is in place at /tmp/job-SiwLBh/index.html.

I've used ~8 minutes. Good. Summarize verified and unverified behaviors.

Unverified: actual audible output (can't listen), audio tail decay audibility, exact 1/8-note timing accuracy (clock is timer-based, slight jitter possible), keyboard shortcuts. I did verify DOM/UI and no console errors.

`/tmp/job-SiwLBh/index.html` is complete — a single self-contained file loading the local `tone.min.js` only. ## What I built - **10 pads** for two octaves of C-major pentatonic (C4 D4 E4 G4 A4 C5 D5 E5 G5 A5), each with pitch/degree labels, its own `SEQ` arpeggio toggle (5 notes selected at start), keyboard support, and pad click → `Tone.PolySynth` note. - **Voice chain**: PolySynth (triangle osc, ADSR, 16-voice) → FeedbackDelay → Reverb (decay 3.4, wet 0.42) with a dry path into a master gain + limiter. No worklet-based nodes, no samples. - **Arpeggiator**: single `Transport.scheduleRepeat(..., "8n")` that reads the live selection each step, sorts ascending by MIDI, and advances one note per eighth note. Selection/tempo are read live, so changes apply mid-play; empty selection triggers no notes. - **Transport**: Play (audio unlocked via `Tone.start()` in the gesture), Stop, and a 60–180 BPM slider. Stop clears the repeat id *before* stopping so no further notes fire; voices are never disposed, so release + reverb tails decay. `startArp` guards on `playing` and clears any prior repeat, so repeated Play can't stack schedulers. - **Visual feedback**: lit pad (glow/raise), sequence chips in ascending order with the current step highlighted, 8-dot step clock, canvas waveform, live "step n/m" readout, audio-state pill. ## Verified in the browser - Initial load: 10 pads, 5-note sequence, no console errors (only pre-gesture autoplay warnings). - Pad click: audio became "running — 44.1 kHz", status showed `Note C5`, pad visibly lit/raised (confirmed with a temporarily extended flash, then reverted). - Play: step advanced 1/5 → 2/5, correct pad glowed, matching chip highlighted, step dot lit. - Mid-play selection change: deselecting A4 instantly changed the sequence to 4 notes and the step counter to n/4; deselecting down to 1 note and then **0 notes** gave "No notes selected — arpeggio is silent" with the clock idle. - Tempo drag mid-play: 104 → 145 BPM, status and transport updated live. - Stop: sequence cleared, tails left to decay, **no audio or scheduling errors in console**; Play after Stop restarted correctly from step 1. ## Not verified - Actual audible audio content, reverb/delay tail audibility, and exact eighth-note timing accuracy (can't listen or measure audio in this harness; the timer-based clock may have small jitter). - Rapid double-invocation of start via keyboard/space was only covered by the code guard, not exercised via a distinct "Play twice while playing" path (the button toggles to Playing/Stop).
